The Invercargill event has three races – and another three opportunities for Edgell to add to his championship points’ tally – and then the fourth round takes place in Timaru the following weekend with another three NZV8 races to contest.
The Ruapuna (Christchurch) round wasn’t great for us,” says Edgell, who was seldom out of the top five during the late November race meeting. The former Formula Ford champion had to contend with a broken driveshaft and a time penalty which knocked his points’ haul relative to other competitors, dropping him from third overall after round one to seventh.
“But we’ve still got five rounds of this season to go, so there’s plenty of great racing to look forward to yet. We’re only 25 points behind John McIntyre in third at the moment. The important thing is to get on with doing the very best that we can and not let Angus Fogg and Craig Baird get any further in front at the top of the points-table. As a team, we’ll focus clearly on each round and take each race as it comes.”
Edgell says the Chester Ford had good speed at the 2.62km Teretonga circuit outside Invercargill last season. “I qualified third and secured a third and a fourth place before being taken out of the last race by other competitor. It was incredibly close racing and I expect it to be the same again this year. There was nothing between the lap times that John, Craig and I were running during the racing – it’s down to a few thousandths of a second!”
The Edgell Performance Racing team has just completed some testing on the Taupo circuit before preparing the Chesters Ford prior to the long drive from their North Shore workshop to Southland. “We haven’t had to make any big changes – the car’s good.”
Edgell says he really enjoys the two back-to-back weekends of racing in Southland and South Canterbury.
“You can get into a groove with six races and two lots of qualifying on consecutive weekends. I really get into my racing at this time of the year as it’s then only three weeks after Timaru – where we qualified second last year – that we head to Manfeild near Palmerston North for the fifth round.”
